What Makes a Blended Whisky?

Blended whiskies are made using a mixture of single malt and grain whiskies. Blends allow for a broader range of flavours and a unique smoothness while also helping producers maintain a similar taste profile year after year. This is why many of the most commercially successful scotch whisky brands are blended whiskies.

Blended whiskies are sometimes shunned by purists who prefer single malts or grains aged in one distinct cask. However, there is a craft in creating a perfect blend of malt and grain whiskies and bringing them together in a way that broadens and satisfies our palettes time and time again.

Scotch whisky is protected by strict standards regarding its production, and blended scotch whiskies are no different. As with any other scotch, blends must use whiskies made with malted barley and grain aged in oak casks no bigger than 700 litres for no fewer than three years.
